This is Mai looking suspicious in what she describes as her first date outfit — first dates put me in a dubious frame of mind as well, my friend.

Alfred Eisenstaedt is known for his picture of an unknown couple kissing on the Times Square during the VJ Day. However, as he admitted, this image was not Eisenstaedt’s personal favorite. That honor goes to the above photo of a young woman in a box seat at La Scala opera on the New Year Day, 1934. Always a master of candid photography, Eisenstaedt was looking for the telling detail to place in the foreground of his image. “Suddenly,” he said, “I saw a lovely young society girl sitting next to an empty box. From that box I took another picture, with the girl in the foreground. For years and years this has been one of my prize photographs. Without the girl I would not have had a memorable picture.”

Editors at Die Dame, who had assigned Eisie to the opera, did not feel similarly. They never printed the picture.

I don't know why I'm not in the mood to write about the awesome day I had at the Goth tour of the medical history museum - and afterwards walking around abandoned buildings.
I could wax poetic about the joy I felt seeing the sun shine off the broken windows, the rust stains creating, colorful stripes on a metal vent on the roof, and the strange cave like mineral deposits creating stalactites on the inside of a large hollow concrete block that I climbed on top of and looked inside.
I wanted to go inside the building. I want to wander around abandoned buildings. I am inspired. I love detritus and rust stains and nature taking over discarded man-made structures.

but thats all I'm saying, because I'm not really in the mood to write lately, but I'd feel guilty if I did not mention it on my journal, which I also write for myself.

-Tomorrow D starts work, and I spend all day in the studio.
I feel good things coming.

Other things I feel like mentioning but not explaining - shiny yellowgreen nail polish. Halloween costumes. watching neverending story again. Just watched '7th moon', fears and accomplishments with teaching. Interest in restarting my mythology research. brain getting bigger with teaching. art recently done in studio. art used for a reggae cd. open studio and the site/insight show.
Lots of things happening, lots of things in my brain. brain no talky. fingers no typey. I go study now.

Life Plans From Here On Out... Nov. 8th, 2009 @ 06:16 pm
[info]pinkypiepinkus
Now a more positive post, after the headache venting session I just had.

I am on unemployment now, living in my parents house with Matt, Phoebe, & Kitty. I'm back in the same room I grew up in. I make $138 a week. I've been back in Wausau, Wisconsin since the middle of June. Since I've been here, I've been able to save up $1,300 and fix my two cavities/toothaches for $400. I hope to save up $500 more by January. With the money I've been saving I plan to start my game company. It doesn't take that much to start up. It costs $130 for the business license, then the websites start up fees, and any other small costs that arise. The first game we are making is designed to be cheap. It will sell for $10, and will cost $5 to make. Our first print run will probably be 500 copies. It will cost $2,500 for the first run, and hopefully bring back $5,000. With that money, we will invest it into more copies of the initial game, or put it into a second game depending on how sales go. The $5k will turn into $10k, and so on.

I don't know what the future will be like. I don't know if I'll make a little or a lot. What I do know is, I am prepared to accept whatever happens. If I only make $20k for the rest of my life, I'll live as cheaply as I can and use my money wisely. If I make more, then I'll have the things I like, but I won't allow myself to be ripped off like Doreen does, and I certainly won't throw money down the toilet.

I do know that once I start this company, it's going to be a lifelong job. I don't see myself getting rid of it, even if it's not profitable. I like the idea of making something, and having someone buy and enjoy my product. It was something I made, and as long as at least 1 person in the entire world enjoys it, then I win.

I like being my own boss and setting my own hours. I feel like more people in our society should run their own business instead of working in a cubicle. I think everyone feels happier when their life is meaningful instead of wasting time being an unhappy cog in a machine.

Shakesville: You have no rights Nov. 8th, 2009 @ 05:55 pm
[info]peitso
Very upset by the Stupak amendment.
The right to control one’s own person is fundamental. Even the right not to be murdered is secondary, since killing is allowed in self-defence.

...

But fair social policies are simple. Either everyone can live according to their beliefs, or nobody can. And personhood is necessarily a belief, a social or religious category. It’s not possible for it to be a matter of objective fact. ...

I'll repeat: personhood is necessarily a matter of belief, whether that’s based on religion or social consensus.

Therefore those who oppose abortion because they believe the fetus is a person with special status have to hope they are never successful in legislating how others handle their pregnancies. If they are, it means that exceptions could be made to the right to control one’s own person.

Once that principle is admitted, then there is nothing to stop a majority with different beliefs from legislating forced abortions.

Over-population is, after all, the source of the environmental problems killing the planet.

There is nothing to stop an aging population from requisitioning a kidney from healthy people walking around with a spare.

There is nothing to stop doctors from performing medical experiments on you for the public good.

There is nothing to stop the majority from deciding all those old folks are too expensive to live.

Really. Nothing. Once you take away the right to control your own body.

Extreme? Sure. So why is it okay when applied to women?

One Perfect Bite: Hungarian Mushroom Soup Nov. 8th, 2009 @ 05:51 pm
[info]peitso
Hungarian mushroom soup is sooooo delicious but usually made with like a pound of butter. This recipe uses some milk and sour cream to thicken up the broth instead. I need to cook this soon...

Hungarian Wild Mushroom Soup
Hungarian Mushroom Soup...from the kitchen of One Perfect Bite

Ingredients:
1 pound fresh mixed mushrooms (Shiitake, Maitake, Oyster etc.) or 1 pound fresh crimini mushrooms
2 cups chopped onions
4 tablespoons butter, divided use
3 tablespoons flour
1 cup milk
1 tablespoon fresh dill fronds or 1 teaspoon dill weed
1 tablespoon sweet Hungarian paprika
1 tablespoon Tamari or soy sauce
1 teaspoon salt
2 cups chicken or vegetable stock, divided use
2 teaspoons fresh lemon juice
Salt and fresh ground pepper to taste
1/2 cup sour cream
1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley

Directions:
1) Using a large skillet, saute onion in 2 tablespoons butter until soft and translucent, about 5 minutes. Add mushrooms, dill, 1/2 cup stock, tamari and paprika. Bring to a boil; reduce heat and simmer, covered, for 25 minutes.
2) Melt reserved 2 tablespoons butter in a 3-quart saucepan over medium heat. Whisk in flour and cook, stirring constantly, for two to three minutes. Add milk, stirring frequently over low heat until thick, about 10 minutes. Stir in mushroom mixture and remaining 1-1/2 cups stock. Cover and simmer 10-15 minutes. Just before serving add salt and pepper to taste; stir in lemon juice, sour cream and, if desired, additional dill. Garnish with parsley. Yield: 4 servings.

Rihanna talks to Diane Sawyer - Feministing Nov. 6th, 2009 @ 05:46 pm
[info]peitso
All right, so previous to the allegations of domestic violence I had never paid any attention to Rihanna; she was just some name that was on MTV and in gossip magazines.  When the allegations did come out the feminist community took notice, and used the situation as an opportunity to talk about being a victim of domestic violence.  In the immediate aftermath there were many discussions about victim-blaming, and it was pointed out that this was the first time where men in the black community spoke out against Chris Brown––something that would have been unheard of ten years ago.  And yes, Rihanna went back to Chris Brown, and though many were disappointed, they also knew that due to the abuse she had experienced, it's really not up to anyone to weigh in on her judgment...battered women go back to the men who beat them, and instead of censuring them for making a "stupid decision" what you should probably do is try to be supportive.

Anyhow, Rihanna kind of became a beacon of hope for much of the feminist community (I mean, from what I saw)...we had high hopes that not only would she leave her abusive partner, but also speak out about her experience so that not only women who are or might find themselves in an abusive relationship have a role model to look up to, but also so that people can maybe start to understand that women who are beaten did not do a single thing to deserve it.  There was a significant "well, what did she do that made him hit her?!" response online once the news hit, and that is utter bullshit.  Once the photos of her battered face came out I think some people realized the gravity of the situation (*cough50CENTcough*), but the truth is that no one is asking to be hit or touched unless zie specifically consents to being hit or touched.  This conversation is obviously not going to taking place in the mainstream media, and is likely going to be sensationalized to the point where no one really learns anything, but I have a small hope that the conversation will at least start.

So needless to say, I'm really glad that Rihanna is speaking out, even if it means another media spectacle.  I think if there's anyone who is positively affected by it, the pros outweigh the cons.  If just one person receives the courage to leave hir abusive partner, or just one person becomes aware that domestic violence can happen to anyone––no matter how strong, smart, or beautiful zie is––then I'm OK with the media spectacle.

This is part of the interview with Diane Sawyer that will be on tomorrow.

From around 2:55: When I realized that my selfish decision for love could result in some young girl getting killed, I could not be easy with that part.  I couldn't be held responsible for telling them "go back"––even if Chris never hit me again, who's to say that their boyfirend won't?  Who's to say that they won't kill these girls?  And these are young girls, and I could not--I just didn't realize how much of an impact I had on these girls' lives until that happened.

A Dress A Day: Regretsy? I've had a few. Nov. 6th, 2009 @ 04:39 pm

Wow.  Just wow.

Regretsy Monster Dress
Of course, when I was looking at it, I thought, "Wow, if they had just hoiked it up a bit so that the flappy eyebrows were the top of the dress, this might actually work." Then I thought "Man, it would be horrible to try to get crumbs out of that skirt." Then I decided I needed more caffeine, and went and got some.

Yes Means Yes! Blog Nov. 6th, 2009 @ 03:54 pm
[info]peitso
I haven't read the book yet (Yes Means Yes!: Visions of Female Sexual Power & A World Without Rape), but I'm so glad I stumbled across the blog.  From what I've gathered so far, the main contributor, Thomas, is in an open marriage and into BDSM.  There are some analysis-oriented posts that are good to read, but I really enjoy the more experience-based posts because they serve as a good example of what it's like to walk the walk.  I mean, it's one thing to intellectually understand open relationships and BDSM and read about them, and it's a completely other thing to put your money where your mouth is and actually engage in these things and be successful.

So here's the most recent post I read that has to do with BDSM.

I Don't Talk About Topping Much

In the end, something is true for me as a BDSMer that I would certainly never claim as a universal. For me, topping or bottoming, BDSM is intimate. Which is not to say that I only ever play with romantic partners or even with people I know well; but it is to say that doing BDSM creates in me a powerful sense of intimacy with a partner. And while I wouldn’t claim it as a universal, there again I’m not alone:

A BDSM session would leave us giddy and light headed. We would lay in bed, catching our breath. We actually fell deeply in love very quickly, which I think is one of the real dangers of BDSM. You have to trust each other and learn to read each other, something that leads to intimacy that you may not have intended. It connects you to your partner quickly and intensely, it’s an adrenaline rush and it’s a release of physical energy that’s like nothing else.

Stir-fried Egg Ramen « INJI Nov. 6th, 2009 @ 11:40 am
[info]peitso
This looks super easy and cheap to make!

ramen2

Ingredients (for 2 or 3 servings)

1. 2 packets of ramen noodles with seasonings
2. 2 diced red poblano
3. 1/2 teaspoon mustard seeds
4. 1/2 cup green peas
5. 15-20 small shrimp
6. pinch of paprika and turmeric
7. 2 eggs
8. 1/4 teaspoon crushed black pepper
9. Salt to taste
10. Oil

Boil water is a sauce pan and add ramen, and cook for slightly less than 2 minutes. Drain water, run under cold water and set aside. Marinate shrimp in paprika, turmeric and salt.

Beat eggs, add black pepper and salt and make omelette. Cut into small cubes or strips.

Heat one teaspoon oil in the same pan and splutter the mustard seeds**. Lower the heat to medium and stir fry shrimp for about one minute. Then add green peas, poblano pepper, and the ramen seasoning and cook for additional two minutes. Add two tablespoons of water for everything to mix well. Add the ramen noodles, mix well and stir-fry on high heat for a minute.

Plate and serve.

** – To splutter/pop/cook mustard, heat oil in a pan till it is really hot (it should not smoke). Drop the mustard seeds into the pan and immediately cover with a lid or splatter screen (This is very important unless you want mustard art on your ceiling, and really want to clean up the stove top and floor). You will hear the seeds popping/jumping around in the oil for few seconds and then the sound will subside. Lower the heat, and remove the lid/screen and follow with the cooking.
